Glossary

Definitions for the concepts, values, protocols, and workflow terms used throughout the guide.

Often confused

Similar words with different purposes.

Shared Values

An editing tool.

Collects related settings from selected items, commands, and events so they can be reviewed or edited together.

Open the Shared Values guide →
Swaps

Runtime values.

Store replaceable data that commands, events, addresses, topics, and Scripts can use while a setup runs.

Panel

A control surface.

Arranges items for one part of a workflow. A scene can contain several panels.

Open the Panels guide →
Scene

A complete configuration.

Bundles interfaces, panels, items, macros, and Swaps. Scenes are independent and only one is active.

Open the Scenes guide →
Command

Sends an action.

Runs from an item and controls DeviceJockey itself or a connected device or application.

Event

Receives or evaluates information.

Updates an item and can execute commands through its Remote Options.

A to D

Art-Net

A network protocol that transports DMX lighting data over IP. DeviceJockey uses an Art-Net interface to update and receive values in a DMX frame.

Art-Net guide →

Blackmagic Videohub

A video router whose input sources can be assigned to output destinations. DeviceJockey can change routes and labels and display the reported routing state.

Videohub guide →

Bluetooth MIDI

A wireless Core MIDI connection between compatible Apple devices, computers, or MIDI hardware. Once connected, it appears as a MIDI source and destination.

Bluetooth MIDI guide →

Command

An action assigned to an item. Commands send values through an interface, control DeviceJockey locally, run a Macro, or execute a Script.

Commands and Events guide →

Direct control

A mapping in which the physical input position determines the item position. For example, a centered game-controller thumbstick maps a slider to its configured center.

DMX

A lighting-control data model with up to 512 channels per universe. Art-Net transports those channel values across a network.

Drive

A relative control method in which an input defines direction and speed instead of an absolute position. A centered input stops movement while the item keeps its reached value.

Game Controller guide →

E to L

Event

A configured reaction to information from an interface or DeviceJockey. An event can change an item value, label, light, protection state, or execute commands through Remote Options.

Commands and Events guide →

Feedback

Information returned by a controlled device or application. Feedback lets the panel display the confirmed external state instead of only the last command DeviceJockey sent.

Grass Valley XML Control

A gateway interface on CCS one or MCP 450 that bridges the C2IP camera network and external clients such as DeviceJockey.

Grass Valley guide →

Host

The network name or IP address of a device, computer, broker, or application to which an interface connects or sends data.

Increment

A relative value that moves an item up or down by steps. Increment control changes the existing item value without defining its absolute position.

Interface

The communication layer between DeviceJockey and a protocol, device, application, or DeviceJockey itself. Interfaces belong to a scene.

Interfaces guide →

Item

A control or display placed on a panel, such as a button, slider, rotary control, toggle, label, monitor, Piano, Logging item, or Web View.

Items guide →

JSON

A structured text format used by integrations such as OBS WebSocket and MQTT payloads. Matching field names and value types are significant.

Last Will

An MQTT message registered with a broker. The broker publishes it when a client connection ends unexpectedly.

MQTT guide →

Live Mode

The operating mode in which panel items control the configured workflow. Edit Mode is used to create and configure the panel.

Local Interface

The built-in interface for communication within DeviceJockey. It provides Local paths, System Events, Script functions, navigation, game-controller values, and other internal behavior.

Logic Pro MIDI Device Profile

A profile installed on the Mac that defines DeviceJockey as a Logic Pro control surface and provides the predefined OSC controls used by the Logic Pro interface.

Logic Pro guide →

M to P

Macro

A reusable sequence of commands stored in a scene. An item can run the Macro instead of duplicating the full command sequence.

Macros guide →

MIDI

A message protocol widely used by musical instruments, audio equipment, software, and controllers. DeviceJockey separates MIDI out and MIDI in into directional interfaces.

MIDI guide →

MQTT

A publish and subscribe messaging protocol. Clients exchange messages through a broker using named topics.

MQTT guide →

MQTT broker

The server that receives messages from MQTT publishers and distributes them to clients subscribed to matching topics.

NRPN

Non Registered Parameter Number. A MIDI message sequence used for parameters that need more identifiers or resolution than a standard Control Change message.

OBS WebSocket

The WebSocket protocol built into OBS Studio for receiving requests and sending responses and events to external controllers.

OBS Studio guide →

OSC

Open Sound Control. A message protocol that uses address paths and typed arguments and is common in audio, media, and show-control systems.

OSC guide →

Panel

A configurable control surface inside DeviceJockey. Panels arrange related items for a task and belong to a scene.

Panels guide →

Path

A structured identifier used to address a value or function. OSC addresses and Local Interface values both use paths, but they belong to different interfaces.

Port

A numeric network endpoint used with a host address. Sender and receiver settings must refer to the correct TCP or UDP port for the protocol.

Q to S

QoS

Quality of Service. The MQTT delivery level selected for a published message or subscription.

MQTT guide →

Range

A mapping between minimum and maximum values. Range commands convert an item position into a protocol value. Range events convert received values back into an item position.

Remote Options

Event and command settings that determine which commands a matching event executes within the same item.

Remote Options guide →

Retain

An MQTT flag asking the broker to store a message as the latest retained value for future subscribers.

MQTT guide →

Scene

An independent configuration containing interfaces, panels, items, macros, and Swaps. Only one scene is active at a time.

Scenes guide →

Script

JavaScript executed by supported commands and events. Scripts can calculate values, use Swaps, inspect item state, change colors, and call context-specific functions.

Scripts guide →

Shared Values

An editing view that collects relevant settings from selected items, commands, and events. Shared Values are not runtime values and are not Swaps.

Shared Values guide →

Swap

A named runtime value used as a replaceable variable in commands, events, addresses, topics, and Scripts.

Swaps guide →

SwapTable

A group of Swaps. A SwapTable organizes related Swap values but does not represent a separate kind of runtime value.

Swaps guide →

System Event

An event generated by DeviceJockey for states such as Panel Ready, Live Mode Started, Panel Loaded, All Interfaces Connected, or Swaps Updated. Availability depends on the item event being configured.

System Events guide →

T to W

TLS

Transport Layer Security. It encrypts a network connection and validates the remote system using certificates or trusted public keys.

Topic

The hierarchical name used by MQTT to route a published message to matching subscribers. Topic names are case-sensitive.

Trigger

A condition used by Remote Options. An event sends selected triggers and commands on the same item execute when their configured triggers match.

Remote Options guide →

Universe

A numbered set of DMX channels transported together. An Art-Net sender and receiving node must use the same universe.

Art-Net guide →

WebSocket

A persistent bidirectional network connection that allows both sides to exchange messages. DeviceJockey uses it for the OBS Studio interface.

Workflow

The complete interaction between user input, commands, interfaces, an external system, feedback events, and the resulting panel state.
